SPIRIT

'See the positive side, the potential, and make an effort.' Dalai Lama

The word 'spirit' derives from the Latin word 'spiritus' which means 'breath'. Through conscious breathing and meditation, you can cultivate a sense of centred awareness - one of the key aspects of the ancient practice of yoga.

Yoga engages the mind as well as the body. It is a philosophical system which makes suggestions for ways of living and provides a framework for personal growth and responsibility. It is an amazing tool which can facilitate better, happier lives.

You are truly healthy when you are not just physically fit but also mentally and emotionally balanced. Not only is yoga designed to find stillness and peace which are essential for mental well being but it helps to achieve a more positive outlook on life.

The word 'yoga' means 'union' and 'union with the divine' and is not just limited to asana (poses) as many people perceive - yoga has so much more to offer than just flexibility and strength. Yoga offers self-reflection, the practice of kindness and self-compassion and continued growth and self-awareness.

The asana are designed to engage thought, concentration and awareness by using focused breathing techniques (prayayama). This almost meditative state allows your mind time to process everything that is going on in your life and is an integral part of yoga practice, opening up the possibility of connecting to what we already have and to who we already are.

Yoga does not just target one area, but the whole body, and practicing with patience and consistency will improve your flexibility, optimise organ function, help blood circulation and keep blood pressure low and joints supple.

There is a saying 'you are as old as your spine is flexible' and by keeping your back in shape will keep the rest of you supple as the spine supports the whole skeleton and facilitates core strength and balance.

Yoga aims to build a well balanced, flexible body and a clear mind. The postures, pranayama and meditation are a fully inclusive fitness package.
